Owned by the state since 1973, the 18,000-acre Savage Gulf State Natural Area in Grundy County protects one of the last-known stands of virgin timber in the eastern U.S. and contains approximately 55 miles of hiking trails. Several trails, providing a half-dozen or more hike options, can be accessed from the Stone Door Ranger Station.
Note: This area is now part of the new Savage Gulf State Park.
