Moccasin Bend is rich in natural and cultural significance for our region. Archeological evidence suggests that humans have continuously inhabited the area for nearly 12,000 years. Last year, the State of Tennessee announced renovation plans for Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute on the Bend. Further development may cause irreparable damage to cultural artifacts and the natural landscape, and our friends at National Park Partners are leading the campaign to protect this land from nonconforming uses within the National Historical Landmark of Moccasin Bend.
Here is what Tricia Mims, Executive Director of National Park Partners, has to say about what we can do to help: “If you can do one thing, sign the petition and then share it on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and any other social network to which you belong. Tell the world what Moccasin Bend means to you! Your enthusiasm is our most valuable asset right now.”
Sign the petition here to urge our state officials to not rebuild on the protected property. You can also learn about Reflection Riding President/CEO Mark McKnight’s thoughts on the culturally sensitive development here.
