Sewanee in Wood and Stone – April

A 2026 photo project featuring the interplay of nature and architecture on the Sewanee campus.

This Japanese maple with its red spring foliage stood out against the backdrop of All Saints’ Chapel.
Shown bare in February, the oak-leaf hydrangeas behind All Saints’ Chapel had fully leafed out in April.
Also featured in February with bare trees, the Quad was looking much more spring-like.
The Chinese fringe tree near Convocation Hall was in full bloom.
While this may not seem an especially noteworthy image, this sycamore tree above and behind the buckeye bush in the foreground, is known as an Apollo 14 Moon Tree. It grew from a seed that flew around the moon aboard the Apollo 14 spacecraft and was set out here by Woods Laboratories in 1976.
