The Trump administration has announced its intent to explore the sale or transfer of federal public lands for housing development, sparking major concerns from conservationists, outdoor recreation advocates, and rural communities that depend on these lands for economic sustainability.
A newly formed Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing, led by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, aims to identify “underutilized” federal lands for potential housing development. The administration claims this initiative will help alleviate the housing affordability crisis, but critics argue it is a thinly veiled land grab to further a long-standing conservative agenda of reducing federal land ownership.
