The Plateau and Valley Chapter of Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM) will hold a public meeting on August 21 to discuss the proposed sand and rock quarries on the South Cumberland Plateau and their potential effects on local communities and the environment.
Topics of discussion will include updates on the proposed sand and rock quarry in Jumpoff, on the legal battle around the Clouse Hill quarry, and on other community threats, including the proposed Monteagle truck stop where people live and children play. Attendees will also discuss the links between these projects, and how communities can work together to widen community awareness of our progress to protect our water, air and continued viability of the present economic engine of tourism.
The meeting will take place Thursday, August 21, from 5:00–7:00 p.m., at the pavilion behind MonteagleCity Hall located at 16 Dixie Lee Avenue, Monteagle, TN 37356. The event will include a potluck meal. Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share.
